The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed its deep concern and condemned the deterioration of the internal political situation in Georgia, including human rights violations and the use of force against peaceful demonstrators. The authorities of the country, which decided to pause negotiations on EU accession, provoked large-scale protests. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Georgian people against curtailing European integration

The protests were caused by a decision of the Georgian government that contradicts the aspirations of the Georgian people for European integration. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasises that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental in any democratic society, and its suppression will have consequences.

In its statement, the Ukrainian side also recalled that similar rhetoric about the “suspension” of European integration had been used by Ukrainian politicians in the past when they tried to turn the country towards Moscow, which resulted in mass protests and political changes.

An attempt to intimidate society

Ukraine calls on the Georgian authorities to stop involving Kyiv in their internal political processes, in particular through the dissemination of propaganda statements about the so-called “Ukrainian scenario”. Such actions, in the opinion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, only contribute to the implementation of the “Belarusian scenario”, which significantly distances Georgia from democratic development.

Solidarity with Georgian diplomats

Ukraine has always supported democratic reforms in Georgia and its movement towards the European Union. In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed solidarity with Georgian diplomats who publicly condemned the government’s decision to suspend EU accession negotiations.

The Ukrainian diplomatic service, which once defended the democratic choice of the Ukrainian people in 2004 and 2014, emphasises the importance of continuing the fight for European values.

European choice is the key to the future

Ukraine is convinced that European integration is the key to stability, prosperity and development of democratic institutions in Georgia. Kyiv remains in solidarity with the Georgian people, supporting their struggle for a common future in the large European family.
