The United Nations intends to raise more than $2.6 billion in 2025 to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians. This was announced by Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal. He noted that the key priorities have already been discussed with UN representatives, including the provision of drinking water, humanitarian demining, the development of alternative heat and energy sources, as well as the restoration of housing and the construction of shelters.
Humanitarian needs plan for 2025
According to Shmyhal, these initiatives are part of the UN Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for Ukraine for 2025.
“We discussed existing and new support programmes. I paid special attention to such important areas as the provision of drinking water to communities in southern Ukraine, demining programmes, the creation of alternative sources of heat and energy, as well as the restoration of housing and the construction of shelters. We expect all assistance programmes to continue and look forward to a significant contribution from the UN to the humanitarian demining process this year, in particular through the launch of new projects,” the Prime Minister said.
Winter support and assistance to IDPs
The Head of Government thanked the UN for implementing assistance programmes aimed at supporting internally displaced persons and providing Ukrainians with winter support.
“The UN has provided $492 million for this heating season. This has become an important support in the context of the energy crisis,” Shmyhal said.
He also added that in 2024, 8.5 million Ukrainians benefited from various types of UN assistance. These programmes include humanitarian, technical and financial support, which have contributed to strengthening the resilience of Ukrainian society in the face of war.
Humanitarian demining is among the key tasks
In its cooperation with the UN, the Government of Ukraine places a special emphasis on demining. This issue remains critical for the restoration of the liberated territories, ensuring the safety of citizens and launching economic activity.
The new projects and programmes initiated jointly with the UN are expected to help significantly accelerate the demining process and ensure more efficient use of the funds raised.
The goal is to provide comprehensive support to Ukrainians
The Government of Ukraine will continue to work with international partners to meet the needs of its citizens in this time of need, and to help raise additional resources for the country’s recovery. The UN remains one of the key partners in this process, providing extensive support at all levels.
