The United States of America clearly emphasises the need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine at UN Security Council meetings. This was stated by First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya in a commentary to Ukrinform.
According to him, two consecutive statements by US representatives in the Security Council demonstrate Washington’s consistent and firm position.
“Their position is as clear as possible: the ceasefire must be unconditional and immediate,” Kyslytsya said.
He recalled that Ukraine had long ago declared its readiness for a ceasefire, but it was Russia that categorically rejected such a possibility without any additional conditions at the talks in Istanbul.
“Washington, through its representatives in New York, has stated: Ukraine is not an obstacle to the establishment of a ceasefire,” the diplomat said.
Kyslytsya stressed that the speeches made by US representatives at the Security Council on Thursday and Friday are of particular importance ahead of the scheduled meeting in Istanbul on 2 June.
He also reminded that any position voiced in the UN Security Council hall is the official state position, not the private opinion of an individual diplomat.
