The transfer to Ukraine of the promised batch of US M1A1 Abrams tanks stored in Australia is currently impossible due to the lack of permission from the US. According to the ABC TV channel, the formal approval from Washington required for the re-export of the equipment has not yet been granted.
These tanks are part of the Australian fleet of decommissioned vehicles purchased in 2007. The newer M1A2 model has already begun to enter service with the Australian Armed Forces.
According to sources in the Ministry of Defence, the first complications arose last month when President Donald Trump temporarily froze military aid to Ukraine. Since then, the process has only become more complicated, and the situation has no clear prospects for resolution.
The Pentagon had previously expressed concern about the technical condition of these tanks and did not recommend transferring them to a third party without a preliminary assessment.
