The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has no military solution – only diplomacy can stop the war, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said. According to him, this is exactly what President Donald Trump is seeking.
He said this before an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Antalya, Ukrinform reports.
“There is no military solution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This war should end not as a result of a military solution, but through diplomacy. And the sooner an agreement is reached, the fewer people will die, the less destruction will occur,” Rubio said.
He stressed that US President Donald Trump has clearly stated his desire to see the war end and his openness to any mechanism that will lead to a just and sustainable peace.
“The President wants millions of Ukrainians to be able to return home, rebuild the country and focus on economic development, not war,” the US diplomat added.
NATO wants peace through strength
At the meeting in Antalya, NATO Allies are also discussing strengthening defence capabilities, strategic deterrence and ways to stop Russian aggression. Rubio noted that the Alliance’s main goal is to prevent wars through strength and unity.
“Whatever the process, we are open to being constructive and doing everything we can to stop this conflict,” the Secretary of State said.
According to him, the situation is very difficult now, but a lot has already been done, and the US hopes to see progress in the near future.
