US President Donald Trump has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin are ready to conclude an agreement to end the war. He told reporters on board the plane during a flight from Washington to Miami.
“I think he (Zelenskyy – ed.) is ready to make a deal. And I think President Putin is ready to make a deal, and you will stop the killing of thousands of young people a week,” Trump said.
The US president said he had recently spoken with Zelenskyy and felt that both sides were ready to resolve the conflict. He also stressed that the United States wants the war to end as soon as possible.
“There is some progress in these conversations,” Trump added.
Asked about possible talks with Putin’s representative Kirill Dmitriev, Trump did not specify any names: “I will just tell you that there are a lot of good conversations about Ukraine, Russia.”
He also criticised Europe for its ineffectiveness in dealing with the Kremlin: “Europe has not succeeded in dealing with Putin, but I think I will succeed.”
Trump’s statement caused a wide response in the international media and diplomatic circles, as the issue of ending the war in Ukraine remains a key one on the world stage.
