The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked Ukraine to withdraw its resolution condemning Russian aggression and replace it with a “softened” statement. The Washington Post reports this with reference to anonymous sources.
According to the newspaper, Washington first amended the Ukrainian text, weakening it, and then proposed its own version, which, according to one diplomat, was more like “a call to appease Putin than to peace”.
The Ukrainian leadership was shocked by this proposal. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a clear instruction to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs not to withdraw the resolution, which had already been agreed with international partners.
“It is shocking that they are putting pressure on Ukraine and not on the Russians,” said a senior Ukrainian official.
This situation raises questions about Washington’s position in supporting Ukraine in the international arena. Time will tell whether this will affect relations between Kyiv and the Trump administration.
