The Joe Biden administration’s decision to allow Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory, particularly in the Kursk region, sends an obvious message to both Moscow and its ally Pyongyang.
Key aspects of the solution:
- Reaction to North Korea’s participation:
- The US is trying to stop Kim Jong-un from sending even more troops to Russia.
- The first strikes could target the positions of North Korean troops in the Kursk region.
If the strikes are successful, they will weaken Russian forces in the region and force Pyongyang to reconsider its support for Moscow.
Allowing the use of ATACMS is an important step in the implementation of Kyiv’s “victory plan” announced by Zelenskyy and demonstrates Washington’s confidence in the Ukrainian armed forces.
This move also serves as a warning to other countries that may support Russia: helping Moscow can have dangerous consequences.
The Kremlin has not yet commented on the decision, but Russian officials such as Maria Butina have called it a risk of World War III. Earlier, Vladimir Putin said that the use of Western weapons in attacks on Russian territory would be regarded as NATO’s direct involvement in the war.
What’s next?
Ukraine does not announce the exact time and place of the strikes, but it is clear that the US decision opens a new phase of the war, where the stakes are significantly higher for all parties to the conflict.
