On Saturday, 22 February, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Schoof. The key topic of the talks was the continuation of the supply of F-16 aircraft to Ukraine, which is an important element in strengthening the country’s defence capabilities.

Zelenskyy stressed that the conversation was about “a just end to the war and strengthening unity in Europe”. He stressed that the Netherlands fully shares Ukraine’s position: “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, nothing about Europe without Europe.” According to him, both countries share an understanding of the need to strengthen military power as a guarantee of security for the entire European region.

The President thanked the Netherlands for all the assistance provided, noting that the country was ready not only to continue but also to increase support for Ukraine. “We expect the delivery of F-16s to continue this year. The sky over Ukraine should be closed and safe,” Zelenskyy said.

In his statement after the conversation, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof stressed that Ukraine should enter any negotiations from the strongest possible position. “I have once again assured President Zelenskyy that Ukraine can continue to count on our military, financial and political support. Through European sanctions, we continue to put pressure on Russia. A ceasefire without Ukraine and Europe at the negotiating table is not an option. For the sake of the future of Ukraine and Europe, Russia must not emerge victorious from this war,” Schooff said.
