On 23 March 2025, Pope Francis left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he had been treated for the past five weeks. On the morning before his discharge, the pontiff made his first public appearance since his hospitalisation, stepping out onto the hospital balcony. The gesture was a symbol of hope for millions of believers who had been following the 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church, Vatican News reported.
Doctors said that the Pope would need a long period of recovery from a serious illness. Francis was hospitalised on 14 February with a diagnosis of bronchitis, which was complicated by bilateral pneumonia. Doctors prescribed him two months of rest and advised him to avoid intense exercise. After his discharge, the pontiff will return to his residence, where special medical equipment will be installed for his comfort, and a team of qualified specialists will accompany him.
Earlier, Francis had repeatedly stated that he was ready to resign if his health did not allow him to fully perform his duties. This time, however, the Vatican has not made any official statements about his possible resignation, leaving the issue open. The Pope’s health remains in the spotlight of the international community, given his age and the importance of his figure for the Catholic world.
Francis’ recovery, known for his humble lifestyle and active stance on social justice issues, will now be closely monitored. Faithful around the world continue to pray for their spiritual leader, hoping for his speedy return to activity.
