Against the backdrop of the war with Russia, Ukraine’s defense industry has made significant strides in providing the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) with modern equipment and weaponry. The Defense Procurement Agency of the Ministry of Defense has signed contracts with 102 domestic suppliers and manufacturers, marking an important step in strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. According to the data, 45% of these companies are involved in the production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which have become some of the most effective tools in modern warfare.
Main Procurement Directions
Domestic suppliers provide the AFU with armored vehicles, mortars, and self-propelled artillery systems. This heavy weaponry is critical for territorial defense and offensive operations. Meanwhile, ammunition and air defense systems are imported from abroad. Such decisions are driven by the fact that these types of weapons have either never been produced in Ukraine or production technologies have been lost over the years of independence.
Contract Statistics
As reported by Hlib Kanevskyi, head of the Procurement Policy Department of the Ministry of Defense, “70% of contracts of the Defense Procurement Agency are concluded with domestic manufacturers, and 30% are imports.” This indicates that Ukraine’s defense industry can meet most of the AFU’s needs, which is an important indicator of the country’s independence and self-sufficiency.
Logistical Procurement
A larger number of Ukrainian suppliers participate in logistical procurement. The light and food industries in Ukraine are significantly better developed, allowing the army to be provided with the necessary resources. The state logistics operator has signed contracts with 180 Ukrainian suppliers, of which 110 are engaged in the production of clothing, 45 in food supplies, and over 25 companies supply fuel and lubricants.
The participation of more than 100 Ukrainian companies in supplying the AFU with weapons and equipment demonstrates the high level of development of the domestic defense industry. These efforts not only contribute to enhancing the country’s defense capabilities but also to economic growth and the strengthening of national sovereignty.
