On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with the Sultan of Oman to discuss a wide range of issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme. TASS reported this with reference to a Kremlin source.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of intensified diplomatic efforts by Oman, which is mediating between Iran and the United States in an attempt to reach a new nuclear deal. US President Donald Trump is seeking to conclude a deal that would permanently prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
According to Russian sources, Moscow expressed “interest in the stability of the Persian Gulf region” and stressed the importance of “all diplomatic efforts to de-escalate”. Official details of the talks remain limited.
It is worth noting that Russia, despite its involvement in global politics, is trying to maintain its influence in the Middle East, in particular by maintaining a dialogue with key players such as Iran and Oman.
