At first glance, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Asia looks like an attempt to restore diplomatic positions after the failure of the summit in Switzerland. However, this tour has more serious and disturbing implications for global security, and especially for Ukraine.
The meeting with the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, was not limited to discussing the supply of weapons. The signed strategic partnership agreements include mutual support in the event of military conflicts. This raises reasonable fears that North Korean soldiers may appear on the Ukrainian front, which will significantly change the dynamics of the war.
Threats to South Korea
Putin began actively threatening South Korea in response to Seoul’s plans to revise its policy of not supplying arms to Ukraine. This pressure indicates Russia’s intention to intervene in any conflicts capable of diverting the West’s attention from Ukraine.
Dictators and ideology
It is noteworthy that Kim Jong-un abandoned the idea of unifying the Korean peninsula, declaring the residents of South Korea to be “another nation.” This statement can be seen as preparation for a potential conflict in which Kim is counting on Russia’s support. This move shows how dictators use ideological arguments to strengthen their positions and prepare for aggressive action.
Geopolitical interests
Putin has invaded the geopolitical interests of China, which is a key economic partner of North Korea and Vietnam. Chinese authorities are likely to put pressure on Moscow to prevent the supply of weapons that could destabilize the region. This creates additional difficulties for Russia, which is trying to use ideology as an alternative to economic influence.
Signal of the West
These actions of Putin are a signal to the West: any attempt to dissuade him from continuing the war in Ukraine could lead to even greater geopolitical complications. The US has already sent an assistant secretary of state to Hanoi to strengthen the US-Vietnam strategic partnership, showing readiness to counter aggressive moves by Russia.
Support for Ukraine
Putin’s visit to Asia emphasizes the need for continued international support for Ukraine. In the conditions of increasing pressure and possible expansion of the conflict, assistance and solidarity with the Ukrainian people become even more significant. Every step of the Russian leader is a reminder of the importance of the unity and determination of the world community in supporting Ukraine in its struggle for independence and freedom.
