Israeli police have detained two key suspects in the QatarGate investigation into possible ties between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and the government of Qatar.
This was reported by Israel’s Channel 12.
What is known about the detainees?
The detainees are key figures in the case of possible financing of individuals from Netanyahu’s office by Qatari structures. The police have not yet disclosed their names, but note that the suspects could have been directly involved in financial transactions related to Qatar.
The investigation is being conducted by the Lahav-443 anti-corruption unit. Investigators are working to establish the sources of funding for the suspects and to find out whether they had direct contact with Qatari representatives.
What will happen next?
The interrogations are expected to last all night. The police are considering two possible scenarios:
– House arrest – if the investigators decide that the detainees can be released under supervision.
– Extension of the arrest – if sufficient evidence is collected, the prosecutor’s office will file a motion with the court to extend the detention.
The QatarGate case is also being investigated by the SABAC. However, according to the court’s decision, all information about the investigation will remain classified for 30 days at the request of law enforcement agencies.
Netanyahu’s reaction
The detention of two employees of his office provoked a sharp reaction from Benjamin Netanyahu. He published an angry post on the social network X (Twitter), but its content has not yet been disclosed.
The QatarGate scandal is gaining momentum, and it remains to be seen how deeply this case could damage the reputation of the current prime minister and his government.
