Ottawa, Canada – More than 250,000 Canadians have signed a petition calling for the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship. The reason for this step was his political activism, which the signatories consider a threat to Canada’s sovereignty. This was reported by the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
What was the reason for the campaign against Musk?
The petition has gained momentum against the backdrop of his active support for the Donald Trump administration, as well as his participation in massive layoffs of US civil servants.
Musk, who was born in South Africa in 1971, became a Canadian citizen in 1989 through his mother, who was born in the province of Saskatchewan. This allowed him to emigrate to Canada and later transfer to the University of Pennsylvania, where Donald Trump also studied.
In recent years, Musk has become a key figure in Trump’s political initiatives, including through his $288 million campaign funding and influence on administrative reforms.
DOGE: Is Musk really in charge of purges of civil servants?
The scandal surrounding Musk escalated after reports about his role in the US Government Performance and Accountability Office (GPO). This body carries out massive layoffs of federal employees, which is officially explained by saving money for taxpayers.
However, critics see these actions as a “political purge” aimed at removing officials whom Trump accuses of prosecuting him.
According to AFP, about a third of DOGE employees have submitted resignations in protest against Musk’s policies.
What’s next?
The petition is gaining popularity, but the legal prospects for its implementation are still unclear. Deprivation of Canadian citizenship is a very complicated procedure, especially if it was granted legally.
Meanwhile, Musk’s ties to the Trump administration and his role in US political processes remain in the spotlight of both US and international media.
