Russian opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza, currently serving a 25-year prison sentence, has been transferred to a prison hospital. This information was shared by his wife, Evgenia, on the social media platform “X”.
“Vladimir Kara-Murza was transferred on Thursday evening from the IK-6 high-security penal colony in Omsk to the FKLU Regional Hospital 11 of the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Omsk region,”
Evgenia wrote in her post, highlighting that lawyers were not allowed to see the political prisoner.
In April 2023, Vladimir Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges of treason, spreading false information about the Russian armed forces, and cooperating with an “undesirable organization” – “Open Russia”. Upon arrival at the Omsk penal colony, the administration immediately placed him in solitary confinement and has done so repeatedly since.
While in pre-trial detention, Kara-Murza’s health sharply deteriorated: he lost 20 kilograms, his limbs began to go numb, and he was diagnosed with polyneuropathy – “significant vascular damage to both feet”. His lawyer, Vadim Prokhorov, linked this condition to suspected poisonings of Kara-Murza in 2015 and 2017.
Vladimir Kara-Murza is known for his efforts in promoting the “Magnitsky Act” in the United States, which led to sanctions against Russian officials responsible for gross human rights violations. This act was a central element in his conviction, and the judge presiding over his case, Sergey Podoprigorov, is listed in the “Magnitsky List”.
The news of Kara-Murza’s transfer to the prison hospital raises serious concerns about his health and rights, underscoring the urgent need for international attention and support in his case.
