Israeli Supreme Court Justice Yitzhak Amit is at the centre of a scandal following the publication of an investigation on the Ynet portal by journalist Netael Bandel. According to the publication, over the past few years, Amit has participated in several civil lawsuits under an assumed name, which casts doubt on his performance as a judge.
The scandal gained momentum after the Tel Aviv Municipality filed charges in 2019 against Amit and his brother Hanoch Dov Goldfreund for ignoring the requirements to fix faults in the apartment that threatened the safety of the residents. Interestingly, Yitzhak Amit used to have the surname Goldfreund, but changed it, which adds to the intrigue of the case.
According to a Ynet investigation, despite knowing about the charges against him, Amit participated in two cases in which the Tel Aviv City Hall was a party. This raises questions about a conflict of interest and possible influence on his judicial decisions.
The case reignites the debate over transparency and ethics in the highest echelons of the Israeli judiciary, highlighting the need for stricter rules to ensure fairness and public trust in the judiciary.
