In a dramatic turn of events, a group of prominent Joe Biden campaign donors, civic leaders and prominent businessmen have sent a letter to the US president urging him to withdraw his candidacy from the next election and give way to another representative of the Democratic Party. The Washington Post writes about this on July 5.
“We respectfully urge you to withdraw your candidacy for re-election for the sake of our democracy and the future of our nation,”
reads the sheet signed by 168 influential representatives of the Democratic Party and its supporters. They remind Biden of the historical example of George Washington, who decided not to run for a third presidential term in order to ensure a peaceful transfer of power and strengthen democracy.
This letter, according to The Washington Post’s sources, was delivered to several White House advisers and caused quite a stir. The signatories say that another term of Donald Trump poses serious threats to America, including global and domestic instability, the abandonment of allies, crony capitalism, political revenge and the further erosion of the rights of women and other groups.
Signatories to the petition include the billionaire daughter-in-law of Walmart founder Christy Walton, billionaire investor Mike Novogratz, former Google executive Ning Mosberger-Tan, Harvard Law School professor Lawrence Lessig, NYU professor and podcaster Scott Gelov, director of Weyco Group Tom Florsheim, former Secretary of the Army Louis Calder and many other influential people.
This call will no doubt be an important element of the political debate in the coming months. The signatories hope that Biden will listen to their wishes and make a decision that will best serve the future of the nation.
