75 cases of African swine fever recorded in Ukraine: most outbreaks in Kyiv region

Свині

As of 22 October, 75 cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been reported in Ukraine, spreading to 20 regions of the country, the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection reports.

The increase in the number of cases in recent months has been attributed to seasonal factors such as harvesting and more frequent visits to forests by the population. The highest number of cases was recorded in Kyiv region – 16, followed by Poltava region with 9 cases, and Mykolaiv region with 8 cases. The share of cases in these regions is more than half of the national figure, while no cases have been recorded in Lviv, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky, Zakarpattia and Rivne regions.

At the European level, according to the OIE, 5914 cases of ASF have been registered since the beginning of 2024, including 1358 cases in Poland, 1158 in Italy, 600 in Latvia and 379 in Germany.

The State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection emphasises that the issue of vaccination against ASF in Ukraine remains open, as no vaccine has internationally confirmed quality and safety. Currently, the main methods of ASF prevention are veterinary and sanitary measures, especially in hunting grounds.
