Israeli politicians have expressed grief after the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that Captain Omer Neitra, who was taken hostage by Hamas, died on 7 October last year and his body was taken to the Gaza Strip.

Israeli leadership’s reaction

The President said:
“Our hearts go out to the Neutra family this morning who, after more than a year of intense, traumatic and worldwide struggle, have received the terrible news of the death of their beloved son.”

The President also emphasised the importance of returning prisoners and the dead:
“We must fulfil our highest task – to return Omer and all our captured men and women: the living to their families, and the dead and killed to a proper burial.”

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz expressed his condolences to Neutra’s family, writing:
“Omer’s life story and dedication embody the best and strongest traits of our people. He was a warrior who bravely held his ground in battle, giving his life for the security of the State of Israel.”

Opposition leader Yair Lapid said:
“Every day that passes reduces our time. We must do everything to bring everyone home now.”

The story of Captain Omer Neutra

Omer Neytra was a “lone soldier” from New York City who served as a tank platoon leader in the 77th Battalion, 7th Brigade. On 7 October, he was captured along with his tank crew during a Hamas attack.

Omer became a symbol of courage and dedication, and his family continued to fight for his return even after the tragic news.
