In 2014, field analyst Zeev (Jabo) Ehrlich, who tragically died this week in Lebanon, played a crucial role in the search for three young men – Naftali Friend, Gilad Shaer and Eyal Ifrach – who were kidnapped by terrorists in Judea and Samaria. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing Israeli Channel 7 .
At the time, the operation was led by Brigadier General Asher Ben Lulu, commander of the Kfir Brigade. The task of coordinating the search in the difficult and inaccessible region of Halhul fell to him. It was during this search that General Ben Lulu met Jabo for the first time, a figure who made an indelible impression on him.
Meeting Jabo: the power of local knowledge
Asher Ben Lulu recalls how, on the first day of the operation, he was approached by an unusual man with a large moustache, wearing sandals and holding maps. “He addressed me as a brigadier and asked if he could spend half an hour of my time to show me the key points that should be examined,” the general says.
Jabo had a thorough knowledge of local caves and ditches that others had no idea about. One of the versions suggested that the terrorists could have hidden the teenagers in a cave. Ehrlich, leaning over a map, pointed out dozens of hiding places previously unknown to the army.
Jabot’s role in supporting search activities
Thanks to Jabot’s guidance, the army units were able to quickly survey an area that they had previously considered unlikely. Every day, Ehrlich joined the military and provided additional information, adjusting search locations and making valuable recommendations. According to Asher Ben Lulu, Jabot’s knowledge and understanding of the area and his love for his native land were invaluable.
Despite all efforts, the teenagers were found dead. After the operation, the bodies were transported for burial. “His advice was invaluable, and thanks to his recommendations, we found the place where the boys were. Unfortunately, it was the end of their lives,” Ben Lulu said bitterly.
Jabot’s legacy and his last mission
Zeev Ehrlich died this week in Lebanon, and the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown. However, Ben Lulu is certain: “Jabo, knowing his dedication and ability to help, probably carried out his last mission with the best of intentions – to help his countrymen. RIP, unforgettable friend and true patriot.”
