10 December, Carmel. An attack took place at the police station on Ha-Haroshet Street, resulting in stab wounds to a police officer and a security guard. The incident, which took place around noon, began with a verbal conflict between a visitor and a guard. During the confrontation, the man stabbed the security guard and a policeman who came to help.
The suspect tried to escape, but was detained after a short chase. The police say that the motives for the attack are related to criminal cases, and the version of a terrorist attack has been ruled out. Investigators are considering all possible scenarios.
The first reports from the scene suggested that there was a shooting, but this information was not confirmed. This is reported by Time Ukraine Israel portal with reference to Vesty.
Status of the victims
Paramedics from Magen David Adom arrived at the scene at 12:00. First aid was provided to both victims on the spot.
The 35-year-old security guard, whose condition was initially assessed as moderate, was hospitalised at the Galilee Medical Centre in Nagariya, where his condition deteriorated to serious. A police officer, 30, was lightly wounded and treated without hospitalisation.
Other incidents
Similar attacks have occurred in Israel before. On 27 August, a man with a sharp object attacked two policemen near the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem, inflicting minor injuries. It later turned out that the attacker was a Russian tourist.
On 30 September, a conflict occurred in the Azrieli shopping centre in Tel Aviv, during which a security guard opened fire after the attacker attempted to steal a weapon. Two men were injured in the incident.
The attack in Carmiel once again highlights the risks faced by police and security personnel on a daily basis. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and society is awaiting results that will help to better understand the circumstances and causes of the incident.
