The Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Moshe Reuven Asman, in his latest post on Telegram, drew attention to the connection between ancient Torah texts and current geopolitical events. He pointed to an interesting detail in this week’s Torah portion that mentions the word “Hamas” – a term that originally meant violence or injustice, and which is known today as the name of the Palestinian organisation.
“It is said that the Torah contains everything,” writes Rabbi Asman, emphasising that the Torah knew about phenomena such as Hamas thousands of years before their modern understanding. He analyses how ancient texts point to the consequences of injustice and violence, which later become the cause of greater conflict and destruction.
The rabbi noted that studying Torah can help us understand the deeper causes and consequences of contemporary conflicts, providing important lessons for the present. He called for a deeper reflection on the historical context and its impact on current events, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
