Israeli police have intercepted more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition, which, according to preliminary data, were stolen from Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) warehouses and intended for terrorist activities. The operation was carried out last Friday by the Northern District Central Police Unit near the Megiddo intersection, The Jerusalem Post reports.
A search of the two vehicles revealed 25 boxes of ammunition for various weapons. The two suspects, residents of Maale Iron aged 22 and 35, were detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning.
Strengthening measures against weapons theft
Investigators believe that the ammunition could have been used in the ongoing war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organisation in the Gaza Strip. The police stressed that the theft of ammunition from military depots is a serious threat, especially in the current difficult security situation.
“This case once again underlines the need for stricter control over the storage of military ammunition and active fight against its illegal proliferation,” the police said.
This operation is part of a large-scale campaign by the Northern District to combat arms smuggling. The detection of the stolen ammunition was made possible by the thorough work of intelligence and operational units.
The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officers are working to identify the source of the theft and possible customers of the contraband.
