On Monday, 21 October, the South Korean Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev over concerns about the possible deployment of North Korean military personnel to Russia to take part in hostilities in Ukraine. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency.
During the meeting, South Korea’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun clearly expressed the government’s position on the issue. As he left the Foreign Ministry building, Zinoviev confirmed that he had met with Kim, but refrained from commenting and did not answer further questions from journalists.
This event demonstrates the growing tension in diplomatic relations between Seoul and Moscow, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and North Korea’s possible involvement in supporting Russia.
