Violent Clashes Erupt in Southport
In Southport, located in the northwest of England, violent clashes erupted resulting in injuries to over 50 police officers. The unrest began following an attack by a 17-year-old on a children’s dance studio, which resulted in the deaths of three children and injuries to ten others.
Suspect’s Background and Arrest
There are claims that the suspect, who is a member of the Muslim community, may be connected to the crime. According to Merseyside Police, members of the far-right group “English Defence League” attacked a local mosque in Southport. The suspect, who is from Cardiff, Wales, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Under British law, the suspect’s identity is not disclosed, and police have warned that the name circulating on social media is incorrect.
Police Response and Public Reaction
Merseyside Deputy Chief Constable Alex Goss stated that “speculation and hypotheses about the status of the 17-year-old in custody are being used to incite violence and disorder on the streets.” He added that “British law is clear, and speculation at this moment will not help anyone.” According to the police, many of those involved in the unrest are not residents of Merseyside.
During the protests, participants set fire to police vehicles, damaged parked civilian cars, and threw bricks at the mosque and shops believed to be owned by Muslims. Police are trying to reassure the public that the motive for the attack is still under investigation and it is not considered a terrorist act.
Prime Minister’s Response and Casualties
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the riots and promised to hold those responsible for the violence accountable. The unrest began shortly after thousands gathered in the city to pay tribute to the victims of the attack, holding bouquets and plush toys.
According to Merseyside Police, 22 officers were injured, eight of them seriously, including fractures, cuts, suspected broken noses, and concussions. Some sustained head and facial injuries, and one officer was beaten into unconsciousness. In total, more than 50 police personnel were affected.
