On 23 February, on the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer published an op-ed in The Sun newspaper calling on the United States to join the security guarantee system for Ukraine.

Paying tribute to the Ukrainian people, Starmer expressed his admiration for their courage and endurance in the face of war, which he compared to the British “bulldog spirit” of World War II. “This is the nightmare that Ukrainians wake up to every day,” he wrote, referring to the ongoing military action provoked by Russia.

Starmer stressed that the current situation calls for a new model of international relations, where Europe will take a greater role in ensuring its security, including increased defence spending and more active participation in NATO. “President Trump is right to say that Europe needs to take more responsibility for our own security,” he added.

The British prime minister paid special attention to the possibility of sending troops to participate in peacekeeping operations in Ukraine after a peace agreement is reached. According to him, this will not only contribute to peace, but also show the strength of international solidarity. “We have to act firmly and fairly,” Starmer stressed, saying that without reliable security guarantees, any peace agreement would be insufficient.

The international community’s reaction to these statements is still mixed, but it is clear that the British leader is ready to take the lead in strengthening global efforts to support Ukraine.
