On Sunday, 12 January, Slovak parliamentarians faced a diplomatic obstacle on their way to Moscow, where they planned to discuss critical issues of natural gas supplies and the situation in Ukraine. The Polish authorities refused to allow the plane carrying the delegation to cross their airspace, forcing them to take an alternative route through the Czech Republic and Germany, Slovak news agency TASR reported.
The incident provoked a negative reaction from Slovak officials. In particular, Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Andrej Danko, who was on board the plane, said: “I don’t understand Poland’s position, but I accept it as a reality.”
At the talks in Moscow, the Slovak delegation is expected to meet with members of the Russian State Duma and government officials. The main topics of the dialogue will be the possibilities of natural gas supplies to Slovakia and discussions on regional security in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This event underlines the growing diplomatic complexities and tensions between European countries in light of geopolitical conflicts and the energy crisis affecting the entire region.
