Terrorist Attack in Dagestan: Assault on Synagogue and Churches in Derbent and Makhachkala

On the evening of June 23, a tragic event unfolded in Derbent and Makhachkala, Dagestan, where terrorists attacked a synagogue, two Orthodox churches, and a traffic police post. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan confirmed the attacks, which resulted in the deaths of a priest and a police officer, according to preliminary reports from the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

In Derbent, terrorists reportedly fired upon the synagogue and then set it on fire. Conflicting information is circulating on Telegram channels, with some sources claiming that a synagogue in Makhachkala is also burning following the terrorist attack.

Shamil Khadulaev, chairman of the Public Monitoring Commission of Dagestan, reported on his Telegram channel that Father Nikolai, a priest, was killed during the church attack in Derbent. In Makhachkala, a security guard was also killed.

The Telegram channel Baza reported that near the synagogue in Derbent, the body of a man with a gunshot wound to the head was found, and another person was hospitalized with burns.

Reports indicate that two militants were killed in Makhachkala, while others managed to escape. The authorities have announced the “Interception” plan to apprehend the remaining terrorists.

The Telegram channel Mash reported that six police officers were killed and 12 were injured in a shootout with militants in Derbent.
