The tragedy unfolded in a prison in Semnan, Iran, where a Swiss citizen accused of espionage was found dead. According to the Iranian authorities, the cause of death was suicide, but the details and name of the deceased were not disclosed. This incident has caused serious concerns both in Switzerland and in the international arena, as reported by Newsru.co.il.
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of its citizen and stated that the Swiss Embassy in Tehran is actively cooperating with local authorities to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The family of the deceased is being provided with consular assistance.
This case may be related to Iran’s practice of what is known as “hostage diplomacy”. Iran often detains citizens of Western countries to use them as a living coin in exchange for its agents detained in the West. For example, Iranian Mohammad Abedni Najafabadi, who was detained earlier at the request of the United States, was recently released in Italy. His release, according to some sources, could be part of an undisclosed deal with Iran, which, in turn, released Italian journalist Cecilia Sala last week.
The Italian and Iranian sides did not confirm the existence of such an agreement, but political analysts believe that such an exchange may have taken place. This incident raises questions about international diplomatic practice and human rights, and highlights the need for greater transparency and thorough investigations into the circumstances of detentions and deaths in Iranian prisons.
