Tel Aviv, 25 February 2025 – Important progress has been made in the difficult negotiations between Israel and Hamas. According to Israeli sources familiar with the details of the talks, Hamas has agreed in principle to hand over the bodies of four dead hostages ahead of the deadline, which was scheduled for Thursday, 27 February.

The transfer of the bodies was a symbolic part of a broader deal that included the exchange of hostages and prisoners. The four victims – Ohad Yahalom, Tzachi Idan, Yitzhak Elgart and Shlomo Mantzur – were among those captured during the fighting, but unfortunately did not survive.

The crisis situation – and how it was resolved

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas have gone through a difficult phase. The deal was threatened with collapse after Israel refused to release 602 Palestinian prisoners scheduled for release on Saturday, 22 February. This decision was the result of a delay by Hamas in returning the bodies.

However, the situation began to change after active diplomatic intervention by the United States. The US administration put serious pressure on both sides, stressing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and moving forward with the next phase of the agreement.

Israeli sources: “We are seeing a positive signal from Hamas, and although there is no official confirmation yet, negotiations are continuing intensively.”

What’s next? Ceasefire and new opportunities for dialogue

The handover of the bodies of the four victims will be the final stage of the first phase of the agreement between Israel and Hamas. An important part of the talks is also discussing a possible extension of the truce, which could give both sides an opportunity to conclude new agreements.

The parties are currently considering extending the ceasefire according to the same scheme as at the first stage of the agreement, with a gradual exchange of prisoners and the return of the bodies of the dead.

US officials: “We believe that maintaining the ceasefire is critical to moving toward a broader solution to the conflict.”

The nuances of the transfer of bodies: no ceremonies and no political symbols

Hamas agreed to hand over the bodies without any ceremonies or public events. This decision was made to minimise tensions and preserve the delicate balance of the truce.

Israeli representatives: “It is important for us to return the bodies of our citizens as quickly as possible and with minimal political fallout.”

It is also reported that the families of the victims have already received preliminary information about the return of the bodies and are preparing for mourning ceremonies to be held in Israel.

A path to peace or another temporary compromise?

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain fragile. Although recent developments demonstrate the parties’ willingness to compromise, the risk of renewed hostilities remains high.

However, some analysts see the current negotiations as an opportunity for a long-term truce or even a basis for future dialogue.

Middle East analyst:

“If this deal is successful, it could be the first step towards a larger agreement.”
