US Vice President J.D. Vance has expressed doubts about the possibility of deploying US nuclear weapons in Poland, despite President Andrzej Duda’s recent call. He noted that he would be “shocked” if Donald Trump supported such an initiative, Politico reports.

“I haven’t spoken to the president on this particular issue, but I would be surprised if he supported the proliferation of nuclear weapons further east into Europe. We have to be careful,” Vance said in an interview with Fox News.

This was a response to Duda’s words, who had earlier said in an interview with the Financial Times: “I think it’s not only time, but it would be safer if these weapons were already here.” According to him, such a move could strengthen Russia’s deterrence.

Currently, US nuclear weapons are deployed at NATO bases in Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. However, the expansion of such a presence to Poland could become another geopolitical irritant, especially in the context of growing tensions in Eastern Europe.

Will the US change its position under pressure from its allies? This question remains open.
