The United States of America is preparing to send additional warplanes to the Middle East in response to threats from Iran and its proxies to attack Israel. This was reported by American officials to The New York Times on Friday. A Pentagon source, who wished to remain anonymous, clarified that US forces in the Middle East are taking the necessary measures to increase combat readiness and protect US troops and US allies from any threats.
Planned events
The number of planes to be sent is still being discussed. The decision will depend on final approval by top officials, including Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III. The officials noted that it is important to choose such a number and types of aircraft that, on the one hand, will ensure the protection of Israel, and on the other hand, will not create the impression of an escalation of the conflict.
US military presence in the region
A significant number of US military forces are already in the region, including 12 warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its escort battle group. This underscores the seriousness of the US’s intentions to protect its allies.
Statements of the US Secretary of Defense
Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III emphasized:
“If Israel is attacked, we will certainly help. You saw how we did it in April. You can expect us to do it again. But we don’t want something like that to happen. We will work hard to make sure we do everything we can to reduce tensions and resolve issues through diplomatic means.”
April attack and successful defense
It will be recalled that in April, the US Air Force shot down more than 70 Iranian drones, which became part of the successful defense of the allies against an attack that included about 300 missiles and drones. The operation involved F-15E fighters from the 494th Fighter Squadron at Lakengate Air Force Base, United Kingdom, and the 335th Fighter Squadron from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. American F-16s, coalition fighters and ships of the US Navy also took part in the operation. The central part of the anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense was provided by Israel using surface-to-air missiles and its own aircraft.
In this way, the United States demonstrates its readiness to protect Israel and its allies in the region by taking the necessary measures to prevent the escalation of the conflict and protect against threats.
