The United States may abandon efforts to end the war in Ukraine if it sees no chance of peace in the coming days. This statement was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to journalists in Paris, CNN reports.

“If we can’t end the war in Ukraine, we have to move on,” Rubio said. “We have to determine very quickly, and I’m talking about within days, whether it can be done.”

His comments came after meetings with European and Ukrainian allies, where he and special envoy Steve Vitkoff presented a peace plan developed by the administration of President Donald Trump. According to Rubio, the plan was “encouragingly received,” although details were not disclosed.

The plan was also passed on to Moscow

As part of his diplomatic tour, Rubio also spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, to whom he conveyed the same plan. The secretary of state stressed that the US wants to find out whether it is possible to end the war at all.

“If that’s not possible, if we’re so far apart that it’s not going to happen, then I think the president is probably at a point where he’s going to say, ‘We’re done,'” Rubio said.

“This is not our war” – Washington’s official position

The Secretary of State reiterated the key position of the Trump administration: The United States is not a party to the conflict.

“This is not our war. We did not start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine for the last three years, and we want it to end, but it’s not our war,” Rubio said.

According to him, Trump personally spent 87 days of his presidency on diplomatic efforts to end the war. But now it is time to determine whether there is a prospect of peace or whether America will end its involvement in this process.
