After the assassinations of a senior Hezbollah official in Beirut and the head of Hamas’ political bureau in Tehran, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and other security forces assessed the situation and decided to increase the security of the Israeli delegation at the Olympic Games in France.
The morning assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, along with the killing of Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut, raised significant concerns among Israeli security officials about the safety of their athletes at the Paris Olympics. According to Ynet and Yedioth Ahronoth, Shin Bet has decided to enhance the protection of the Israeli delegation.
Additional security personnel have been added to the Shin Bet and delegation security units, who will accompany the athletes both in the Olympic Village and at remote sites. The delegation members have been issued strict security instructions, and local security forces, working alongside their Israeli counterparts, have intensified their measures.
Shin Bet conducts daily situation assessments and adjusts security measures accordingly. Even before these assassinations, Israeli athletes received threats on social media, which became part of hate-driven attacks against the Israeli delegation. This led to an investigation in France and an unusual statement from the National Security Council indicating that these were attacks initiated by Iran.
Given the increased security around Israeli embassies worldwide, there are concerns that the Israeli delegation in Paris might become a target for attacks. Israeli security services conducted a specific assessment to prevent potential threats. French security forces are also involved in ensuring the safety of the delegation.
Israeli athletes will be informed about the behavior rules and potential provocations that might be directed against them. “The Israeli delegation at the Olympic Games could become a target for revenge, we are in a special situation,” security officials stated.
