The US Department of Justice has asked a federal appeals court to uphold a law requiring Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US assets by January 19. This comes after the announcement that TikTok poses a serious threat to US national security. According to Reuters, this threat is related to the possibility of access to large volumes of personal data of users and possible manipulation by the Chinese government through the application.
Representatives of the Ministry of Justice emphasized two main risks: data collection and covert manipulation of content. They noted that TikTok provides the Chinese government with the means to undermine US national security.
Earlier, the US Congress approved a resolution that would ban the download of TikTok unless ByteDance sells the platform within 270 days. The White House also asked the District of Columbia Court of Appeals to dismiss lawsuits by TikTok, ByteDance and a group of TikTok creators trying to block the law.
