The administration of US President Donald Trump has privately made it clearthat in order to normalise relations between Washington and Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy must publicly apologise. Bloomberg reported this with reference to a European official.
According to him, after a loud spat between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House and the early conclusion of negotiations with the Ukrainian delegation, most European leaders supported the Ukrainian president. At the same time, some politicians are calling on him to take diplomatic steps to preserve the partnership with the United States.
In particular, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte advised Zelenskyy during a telephone conversation to show respect for what Trump “has done for Ukraine” and to find a way to resume dialogue with the White House.
After the scandalous meeting in Washington, Zelenskyy travelled to London, where he held talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. According to Bloomberg, immediately after the meeting, Starmer spoke by phone with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. Although the details of the conversations were not disclosed, the agency’s sources described them as “constructive”.
This situation raises the question of future US support for Ukraine, as a public diplomatic conflict between Kyiv and Washington could pose risks to military aid and further international support.
