Former US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning gender reassignment medical procedures for people under the age of 19. This was reported by the White House website on 28 January.
The decree bans federal funding for medical facilities that provide services such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery to minors.
Trump has instructed the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services to “take all necessary steps to end chemical and surgical mutilation of children”.
The document emphasises that the United States will not fund, support or facilitate sex reassignment of children, and will enforce all laws that restrict or prohibit such procedures.
Additional restrictions
The decree also cancels state health insurance for transgender procedures among young people, in particular:
– medical benefits for military personnel of the Ministry of Defence,
– state insurance programmes for civil servants and postal service employees.
Trump argues that many children who undergo sex reassignment procedures later regret it and realise that they will no longer be able to have children of their own or breastfeed them.
