Trump calls China’s response ‘panic’ as tariff exchanges escalate

Former US President Donald Trump has criticised China’s decision to impose 34% tariffs on US products, calling Beijing’s actions “wrong” and a sign of panic. He made the statement on 4 April on his Truth Social platform.

“China played it wrong, they panicked – the one thing they can’t afford!” Trump wrote.

As a reminder, Washington, under Trump’s leadership, has introduced new duties, which, together with the previous ones, totalled 54% on Chinese goods. In response, China has imposed 34% tariffs on all US imports, signalling a sharp escalation of the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

Commentators have noted that such an exchange of economic blows could have serious consequences for the global market, especially against the backdrop of existing supply chain disruptions.

The topic of tariffs and the economic confrontation between the US and China is expected to be one of the key issues in Donald Trump’s election rhetoric ahead of the 2024 elections.
