US President Donald Trump has said he is seeking a new nuclear deal with Iran and has already sent an official letter to the country’s leadership. He said this in an interview with Fox Business Network, Reuters reports.
According to Trump, in the letter he called on Tehran to agree to negotiations to avoid further escalation:
“I said that I hope for negotiations because it will be much better for Iran,” the US president stressed.
Trump stressed that Iran has only two options: an agreement or the risk of a military scenario.
“I would prefer to make a deal because I don’t want to harm Iran. They are wonderful people,” he added.
Why is this important?
This is not the first attempt by Trump to resume negotiations after the US withdrew from the previous nuclear deal in 2018. According to journalists, the letter could have been addressed to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, but there is no confirmation of this from the White House.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently refraining from commenting on Trump’s statement.
What preceded it:
– On 11 October 2024, Reuters reported that Iran had not yet decided to develop nuclear weapons.
– On 13 December, the WSJ reported that Trump was considering preemptive strikes to deter Tehran.
– On 4 February 2025, the NYT wrote about Iran’s intensified research into accelerated nuclear weapons development.
– On 9 February, Trump already announced his desire to conclude a non-nuclear status agreement with Iran.
What’s next?
Despite the deteriorating situation in the region and Iran’s activity in developing its nuclear programme, Trump is willing to resolve the issue diplomatically. At the same time, Israel and other US allies are closely monitoring the process, as any agreement with Tehran could dramatically affect the balance of power in the Middle East.
