US President Donald Trump has extended the sanctions imposed on Russia by the Joe Biden administration in 2021. The relevant document was published in the US Federal Register.

The current head of the White House upheld his predecessor’s decrees declaring a state of emergency in relations with the Russian Federation and imposing economic restrictions on Moscow.

“Specific harmful foreign activities of the Government of the Russian Federation… continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States. For this reason, the national emergency should continue beyond 15 April 2025,” the statement said.

The document also highlights key threats from Russia:

  • interference in the democratic processes of the United States and its allies;
  • organising and supporting cyberattacks against US institutions;
  • use of corruption to influence foreign governments;
  • persecution of dissidents and journalists;
  • undermining security in regions important to US national security;
  • violation of international law and the territorial integrity of states.

As a reminder, Joe Biden declared a state of emergency on 15 April 2021 in response to the hostile activities of the Russian government. Subsequently, this regime was repeatedly extended with new sanctions measures.

Now Trump has officially extended them for another year – until mid-April 2026.
