During a speech to Congress on 4 March, US President Donald Trump referred to an address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published the day before on Twitter, in which he called for a resumption of dialogue and declared Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate for peace.
This was reported by Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova on her Facebook page.
“In a very difficult situation, we are still moving forward, building relationships and promoting our priorities. President Donald Trump read out the letter from our President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his address to the nation and said: “I appreciate that he wrote this letter,” Markarova said.
During his speech to Congress, Trump confirmed that he had received an important message from Zelenskyy, in which Ukraine expressed its readiness for peace talks to end the war.
“Ukraine is ready to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring a lasting peace closer,” Zelenskyy said in a post that signaled a resumption of dialogue amid tense relations between Kyiv and Washington following public conflicts during a meeting at the White House in late February.
Trump’s statement about Zelenskyy’s letter has already caused a wide response among American politicians and experts, as it could become a starting point for attempts to return Ukraine and the United States to constructive negotiations, including on the continuation of military assistance.
