US President Donald Trump said that, according to his information, Russia “made a mistake” when it launched a missile attack on the city of Sumy on Palm Sunday, killing at least 34 people.
He told reporters on board the presidential plane Air Force One, CNN reported.
“I think it was terrible. And I was told they made a mistake. But I think it’s a terrible thing,” Trump said.
He did not specify who had informed him of Russia’s “mistake”. At the same time, Trump reiterated that if he had been president earlier, the war in Ukraine would not have started.
“I think the whole war is a terrible thing. I think that starting this war is an abuse of power. If I were president, this country would never allow this war to start. This war is a disgrace,” he said.
When journalists asked him what he meant by Russia’s “mistake”, Trump answered briefly: “They made a mistake. I believe they did – look, you can ask them”.
On 13 April, Russian troops attacked the centre of Sumy with ballistic missiles, hitting civilian infrastructure on Palm Sunday. The attack killed at least 34 people and injured more than 80.
