US President Donald Trump has said that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine are progressing well and that relations between Kyiv and Moscow could be “good” in the future. He said this on 13 April on board Air Force One, Reuters reports.
“I think the relationship between Ukraine and Russia can be a good one, and you’ll see that soon enough. There comes a time when you either have to put up or shut up and see what happens, but I think it’s going well,” Trump said.
His comment came amid talks between the US and Russia to end the war. The day before, US special envoy Steve Witkoff visited St Petersburg, where he spoke with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for more than four hours.
According to media reports, Vitkoff told Trump that the fastest way to achieve a ceasefire would be to transfer control of the four seized regions of Ukraine where Moscow held pseudo-referendums in 2022 to Russia.
There has been no official confirmation of such a plan from Ukraine.
