27 March – Sky News Arabic has released the contents of a personal letter sent by former US President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the letter, Trump called on Tehran to de-escalate, peace and possible economic cooperation – while warning of a “swift and decisive” response if the confrontation continues.

“Under my leadership, the United States is ready to take an important step towards peace and de-escalation. Together, we can lift sanctions, strengthen the Iranian economy, and open the door to cooperation between our countries – not only for the sake of our peoples, but for the sake of stability in the Middle East and around the world,” the letter reads.

Trump stresses that if Iran rejects the “outstretched hand” of the and continues to support terrorist organisations or military adventures, America’s response will be immediate.

“We will not sit idly by in the face of your regime’s threats to our people or our allies,” he said.

The letter also calls for negotiations:

“If you are ready for dialogue, we are ready too. But if you continue to ignore the demands of peace, history will record that you have lost a great opportunity.”

The day before, Trump had publicly commented on the situation around Iran’s nuclear programme, confirming that the letter had been sent.

“I sent them a letter and said: ‘You have to make a choice. Either we sit down and discuss the situation, or very bad things will happen to Iran. And I don’t want that to happen,” he told reporters, adding that he prefers a diplomatic solution.

Trump’s letter comes amid rising tensions in the region and could mark a new stage in the complex US-Iranian relations. Tehran has not yet officially commented on the letter.
