US President Donald Trump has said that the United States will not allow Iran to enrich uranium even as part of a potential nuclear deal. He wrote about this on Monday on his Truth Social social network, Axios reports.
“Under our potential deal, we will not allow any uranium enrichment!” Trump stressed.
However, as Axios notes, this position contradicts the conditions that Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff had offered Tehran just days earlier. In particular, it is a permission for limited low-level uranium enrichment, without the requirement to completely dismantle Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
“The question is whether Trump will really stick to this hardline stance or show flexibility for the sake of a deal,” the analyst said.
It is known that Tehran has repeatedly stated that it will not sign any agreement that does not allow uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes.
Against this backdrop, new tensions are emerging in the negotiations. Despite his ambitious statements, Trump’s position could complicate a potential compromise, especially in the run-up to the US presidential election.
