2 March 2025, London – The United Kingdom and France are working together on a peace plan for Ukraine to be presented to US President Donald Trump. This was announced by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to Reuters, calling the initiative “a step in the right direction” after a tense meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the White House.
According to Starmer, the goal is to engage a European “coalition of the willing” to support Kyiv and create conditions for a sustainable peace that would eliminate the risk of a repeat Russian invasion.
“We need to find countries in Europe that are ready to act more decisively,” the Prime Minister said. “That is why the UK and France have become leaders in this process, and President Macron and I are working on this plan, which we will later discuss with the US.”
Starmer held talks with Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump on Saturday after hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Downing Street. It came a day after a high-profile spat between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House that sparked an international outcry.
At the same time, the British Prime Minister stressed that the success of the peace agreement is possible only with the support of the United States.
“I’ve always said that America’s participation is essential to the implementation of such a plan, because without it, there are no security guarantees,” Starmer said.
London is preparing to host Western leaders for a summit on Ukraine to give a new impetus to peace initiatives and coordinate further action to end the war that has been going on for more than two years.
The plan, developed by the UK, France and Ukraine, is expected to form the basis for a new round of negotiations, in which the US is expected to play a key role as a guarantor of security and stability in Europe.
