Ukrainian forces claimed a significant success during the fighting in the Kursk region, capturing an entire company of Russian troops. This is the largest number of prisoners in one day since the beginning of the Russian invasion, reports Reuters.
According to information from the Ukrainian special forces, 102 Russian servicemen surrendered, including soldiers of the 488th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment and the Akhmat unit. The operation was carried out as part of the sudden invasion of the Kursk region, which began on August 6. The Ukrainian army claims to have captured more than 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.
“Our special forces have taken control of a fortified redoubt equipped with underground communications, barracks, a dining room, an arsenal and even a bathroom with showers,” says an official message from Kyiv.
Footage released by the Ukrainian military shows dozens of Russian soldiers in a bunker, bent over or face down, waiting to be transported to a detention center.
The Ukrainian side declares that captured Russians will eventually be exchanged for Ukrainian prisoners of war. This week, the Commissioner for Human Rights of Ukraine, Dmytro Lubinets, announced a new round of negotiations with the Russian side regarding the organization of the exchange of prisoners.
The most recent prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia took place last month, and the growing number of detainees could prompt new rounds of talks that could see many troops return home.
