Changes in Religious Education in Netivot

As Shas becomes increasingly ultra-Orthodox, Rabbi Chaim Yosef Avrahami’s community in Netivot has decided to switch to state-religious education, funded by the Israeli Ministry of Education. This move reflects a desire for better financial support, the inclusion of core subjects, and improved social conditions for teachers and students.

Political Achievements and Electoral Success

In the recent local elections in Netivot, Rabbi Avrahami’s community did not support Shas but instead created its own list, which became the largest in the city council with seven out of 17 seats. This success marks a significant achievement for an alternative Orthodox community and poses a serious challenge to Shas.

History of Opposition and Future Plans

The rift between Rabbi Avrahami and Shas is not new. In the 2015 elections, Rabbi Avrahami supported Eli Yishai and his “Yachad” party, which also competed with Shas. Although “Yachad” did not pass the electoral threshold, Rabbi Avrahami and his community continue to hold significant regional influence. Currently, they do not plan to run in national elections but may support another party that represents traditional community interests.

Different Views on Military Service

Unlike Shas, Rabbi Avrahami’s community has a more lenient stance on military service. Some of his students serve in the army, and Rabbi Avrahami himself blessed soldiers preparing for combat in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing support for all of Israel.

Legacy of Rabbi Yoram Avrahami

Rabbi Yoram Avrahami, the father of Chaim Yosef Avrahami, was a prominent leader in Netivot known for his openness to various religious traditions and his focus on educational innovation. After his death in 2015, his sons continued his work, expanding educational institutions and spreading his teachings across the country.

Rabbi Chaim Yosef Avrahami’s community in Netivot continues to challenge Shas both in education and politics. Their achievements at the local level highlight their growing influence and potential for future collaboration with other parties representing traditional community interests.
