A Hamas spokesman confirmed that the release of Israeli-American hostage Idan Alexander was discussed during talks with US diplomats in Doha.

According to Reuters, citing a senior representative of the group, several rounds of talks have already taken place, during which the parties discussed the conditions for further implementation of the agreements on the gradual exchange of prisoners.

What did Hamas say?

According to Taher al-Nono, an adviser to the group’s leader, Hamas approached the issue of releasing the hostage “flexibly” and believes that it can serve the interests of the Palestinian people.

He also confirmed that the negotiations between the parties lasted several weeks and were held within the framework of a phased ceasefire agreement that came into force on 19 January 2025.

The role of the Trump administration

Al-Nono emphasised the important role of US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who helped to reach a ceasefire agreement. According to the Palestinian representative, this was a key factor that allowed the parties to continue the negotiation process.

What’s next?

According to Palestinian sources, four meetings between US representatives and Hamas leaders took place in Doha last week. Among the main topics of the talks:

– release of hostages

– Possible extension of the ceasefire

– future format of the negotiations

Will the Trump administration be able to make progress in the negotiations and force Hamas to make concessions? The situation remains uncertain.
